Greatest Hits (2001) Alice In Chains

MIA for the latter half of the '90s and into the new millennium, Alice In Chains added GREATEST HITS to the list of seemingly posthumous releases in a canon whose last studio album was a 1995 self-titled release. This bare-bones 10-song sampler does serve as a quick overview for neophytes interested in one of the seminal bands to emerge from a generation of grunge bands including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Between Jerry Cantrell's thick, sludgy riffs and Layne Staley's primal howl, AIC had the market cornered on nihilism.
Four cuts on this compilation come from the band's 1991 masterpiece DIRT and serve as a centerpiece, the most compelling being the harrowing "Rooster" (a tribute to Cantrell's Vietnam vet dad), the hypnotic isolationism of "Them Bones," and the plodding despondency of "Angry Chair." Elsewhere, AIC throws some curves with "I Stay Away" (featuring lush orchestration that gilds this dark lily) and the unexpectedly tender 1995 cut "Heaven Beside You." For those with a casual interest in Alice In Chains, GREATEST HITS will work well. Hardcore fans are directed to the more generous NOTHING SAFE: THE BEST OF THE BOX.

Greatest Hits Vol. 1 (2004) Korn

GREATEST HITS VOL. 1 is a 17-track primer for Korn, a key force behind the "nu metal" tsunami that swept through pop music in the mid-to-late 1990s. Led by frontman (and former coroner's assistant) Jonathan Davis, these California natives weave low-tuned guitars, hip-hop-fueled bass lines, and bleak imagery into memorable songs like the bile-fueled stomp-fest "Right Now," goth-tinged "Alone I Break," and frenetically raw "Freak on a Leash."
Davis's struggle with family dysfunction is a consistent theme, from the band's self-titled 1994 debut (a foreboding "Clown"), right up through 2003's TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR (an uber-heavy "Did My Time"). Korn also keeps pace with peers Marilyn Manson and Limp Bizkit (who both recorded unlikely covers) by adding a pair of new tracks--a faithful reading of Cameo's "Word Up!" and, in keeping with their anti-authoritarian bent, a slight tweaking of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 1, 2, 3)." Fleshing out this package is a glimpse into the Korn concert experience via a DVD of a performance at New York City's CBGB, recorded in November of 2003.

Allure (1997) Allure

This debut by an all-female R&B quartet with four-part harmonies reminiscent of En Vogue is the first album on Mariah Carey's Crave Records. Like Carey, Allure's crossover success can be attributed to its blend of R&B with hip-hop beats, and to an album that includes both hot dance tracks and smooth ballads. The album gets an added boost from production by the Track Masters (Poke and Tone) and guest appearances by L.L. Cool J, Nas and Raekwon.

The lead-off single, "Head Over Heels," lays Allure's vocals over the MC Shan classic "The Bridge." Popular samples abound, giving the music an instant appeal. "Anything You Want" uses the O'Jays' "Cry Together" for its background, and "No Question" builds on Mtume's "Juicy Fruit." Paying further tribute to the old school, Allure teams up with 112 for a remake of Lisa Lisa's "All Cried Out."

August and Everything After (1993) Couting Crows

With their stunning craftsmanship and a classic sound DEEPLY rooted in whistlestop America, the anthems and rural overtones which distinguish the songs on AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER evoke the same kind of visceral reaction which once greeted The Band. But AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER is not an exercise in nostalgia.

Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection (2004) Shawn Colvin

Grammy-winner Shawn Colvin came up on the East Coast folk scene in the '80s, finally scoring a major label deal toward the end of that decade. Despite consistently strong work centered around her resilient voice and folk-rock songwriting, she didn't hit it big until her 1996 album A FEW SMALL REPAIRS, which put her on the pop map, though the singer-songwriter crowd had been cooing her praises for years.

One In A Million (1996) Aaliyah

Aaliyah's debut paved the way for a legion of teen-aged female R&B singers, including Brandy, Monica and 702. Aaliyah is no kid, though; she sings with a maturity that belies her age. Much about her life has changed, but she remains a mature young lady who sings about the ups and downs of true love experiences on this follow-up record.

Obviously a trained singer, Aaliyah glides easily between vocal ranges. Her soft style is more refined than the over-exaggerated riffs of other R&B songstresses. As on her first album, she pays tribute to the Isley Brothers, this time with "Choosey Lover." She adds more old-school flavor with her remake of the Marvin Gaye classic "Got To Give It Up."

Love Jones (1997) Original Soundtrack

This soulful R&B and jazz soundtrack is a valentine to love itself, and it features mostly new tracks by first-rank artists. Among them are the Refugee Camp All-Stars, whose intense "The Sweetest Thing" was produced by two of the three Fugees and features Fugees singer Lauryn Hill; it's yet another showcase of Fugeean diversity. R&B singer Dionne Farris admits a weakness for a man in "Hopeless." Maxwell offers an alternate version of "Sumthin' Sumthin'," with its seductive groove. The soundtrack also includes a couple of classic jazz recordings, including Duke Ellington and John Coltrane's version of "In A Sentimental Mood."

98 Degrees & Rising (1998) 98 Degrees

"True To Your Heart" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Song Written For A Motion Picutre Or For Television.

This harmony-driven Ohio foursome's sophomore release finds brothers Nick and Drew Lachey, Justin Jeffre and Jeff Timmons collaborating with some of the day's hottest producers. The Trackmasters-produced "Do You Wanna Dance" uses a sample from Kool & The Gang's classic "Get Down On It." Keith Thomas and Anders Bagge also worked on tracks that range from hip-hop-flavored R&B to pop and Eurodance styles.
Love songs are numerous on this release, including a remake of "I Do (Cherish You)," originally recorded by country singer Mark Wills. Producers Sean Hosein & Dane Denviller co-wrote the acoustic guitar-accented "Still." The maturity of the groups shines through on their second album on tracks like "Because Of You," "Heat It Up" and 'True To Your Heart," which features an appearance from Stevie Wonder.

Mind, Body & Song (1994) Jade

Right off the bat, Jade overwhelms listeners with their vaulting a capella harmonies on "When Will I See You Again," placing them securely in the gospel firmament that has produced countless R&B stars. But it is Jade's way with a modern romantic ballad and lush, bouncy funk that has established them as one of the hottest contemporary vocal groups.

Like En Vogue, they convey a fervent, sophisticated brand of sensuality on MIND, BODY & SONG, equal parts sweet surrender and gender bender. Thus you have songs like "If The Lovin' Ain't Good" and "If The Mood Is Right," with their silky promises of carnal bliss, but only if bachelor number one is hip enough to realize that the sexiest part of the female anatomy is her brain.
Elsewhere, Jade sustains their smokey, distinctive aura on heated romantic fare such as "Bedroom" and "I Like The Way," while the more upbeat arrangements of "There's Not A Man" and "Every Day Of The Week" cross over into dance-oriented territory. And in the middle of it all, Jade offers up the contrasting mood of "What's Goin' On" (not the Marvin Gaye classic), wherein they address their concerns about the troubled lives of their urban contemporaries.

Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993) Soundtrack

SISTER ACT 2: BACK IN THE HABIT owes a lot to such films as BLACKBOARD JUNGLE and TO SIR, WITH LOVE, where a novice teacher has to find a way to reach impoverished, undisciplined street kids. The film contains some outstanding musical numbers and fine comic performances that make it worth seeing. It also has historical significance as the first Hollywood blockbuster sequel entrusted to an African American director, Bill Duke. Whoopi Goldberg stars as Deloris, who disguises herself as a nun again to teach music at a failing Catholic school. Among her students is Rita (singer/rap artist Lauryn Hill), a talented performer whose mother feels that music is a waste of time. Deloris whips her unruly class into shape and enters them into a state choir competition. Along the way she takes on the school's administrator (James Coburn), who seems determined to shut down the school and sell the land for a parking lot.

Experience the Divine - Greatest Hits (1993) Bette Midler

A well-chosen best-of collection that covers Bette Midler's career up to 1993, EXPERIENCE THE DIVINE hits all the familiar high points. Yes, "The Rose" and "Wind Beneath My Wings" are here--along with longtime favorites like her sultry version of the old 1960s dance hit "Do You Wanna Dance?" and her theatrical take on Tom Waits's "Shiver Me Timbers." Midler's true genius--a quality that only her biggest fans have noticed over the years--is the way that she's casually, almost surreptitiously, updated the Great American Songbook, showing how familiar pre-rock standards, including "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)" and Cole Porter's "Miss Otis Regrets" fit seamlessly next to songs like the girl-group classic "Chapel of Love" and John Prine's "Hello in There." EXPERIENCE THE DIVINE might feel cursory to devoted fans, but for casual listeners, this disc--along with perhaps her still-exciting debut, THE DIVINE MISS M--is definitive.

Pronounced Jah-Nay (1994) Zhané

Co-produced by rap heavyweights Naughty by Nature, who are skilled in treading the line between street and mainstream acceptance, PRONOUNCED JAH-NAY packs a rhythmic punch, but soulful strings and airy keyboard chops create a more sophisticated ambience that fits Zhane's honey-glazed vocals like a velvet glove. On the whole, the song-writing is fairly standard, alternating between emotion-laden quiet storm paens ("Off My Mind," "For A Reason") and more uptempo exhortations to dance ("Groove Thang" and a nice remix of "Hey Mr. D.J."), but Zhane is clearly good at what they do.

Greatest Hits : First Ten Years (1998) Vanessa Williams

Ater a scandal surrounding nude photos left her without her Miss America crown, Vanessa Williams made a remarkable comeback as a recording artist in 1988. This well-selected 13-track collection presents the finest R&B/pop songs by Williams, featuring both her upbeat, dance-oriented tunes (see "The Right Stuff" and "The Comfort Zone") and adult-contemporary ballads (the sweeping single "Save the Best for Last" and the Sade-like "Betcha Never"). Other highlights of the compilation are the thoughtful, piano-driven number "Love Is" (with Brian McKnight) and "My Flame," a track that finds Williams quite comfortable in a smooth-jazz setting and reinforces her reputation as a deceptively dynamic performer, one who would go on to win respect on both the stage and the screen.

Next (1997) Vanessa Williams

Vanessa Williams' NEXT sees her taking yet another soulful, mature step forward in the inspiring balancing act that is her career. While starring on television, in film, and on Broadway, she has also managed to produce a steady stream of R&B hits. With NEXT, Williams calls on such contemporary R&B luminaries as R. Kelly, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis, whose production and instrumental performances grace the album with a lush atmosphere and warm sound befitting its serious, mature tone.

From the acerbic "Who Were You Thinkin' 'Bout" to the mournful "And If I Ever," Williams shows a range of emotion that can only be the result of a life in the theater, injecting a dramatic intensity into her accomplished vocal performances. Taking on "Someone Like You" by Van Morrison, she gives it a gentle, soulful reading, powerful and free of pretense. Closing with the epic "Oh How The Years Go By," NEXT proves as varied and powerful as the multi-talented Vanessa Williams herself.
