CONTROVERSY (1981) Prince

CONTROVERSY is the fourth release from Prince, and it continues in the tradition of his debut DIRTY MIND, with funky rhythms, throbbing electronic accents and titillating lyrics. Featuring the successful title cut and the club hit "Private Joy," CONTROVERSY works off Prince's infamous juxtaposition of sex and religion. This is explicitly depicted in songs such as "Annie Christian" and the sultry ballad "Do Me, Baby" where during a long instrumental sequence, his sighs blatantly indicate carnal activity. As with many of his recordings, Prince maintains complete creative control here by handling all the writing, playing and production himself.

Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection (2004) Shawn Colvin

Grammy-winner Shawn Colvin came up on the East Coast folk scene in the '80s, finally scoring a major label deal toward the end of that decade. Despite consistently strong work centered around her resilient voice and folk-rock songwriting, she didn't hit it big until her 1996 album A FEW SMALL REPAIRS, which put her on the pop map, though the singer-songwriter crowd had been cooing her praises for years.

You Can Dance (1988) Madonnna

Madonna's meteoric rise to stardom had as its springboard the early '80s NY club scene; dance music has provided a home base for any of the musical journeys her widely varied career has seen her take. 1987's YOU CAN DANCE found the reigning princess of pop revisiting some of her more famous works, courtesy of the mixing skills of some of the friends she'd made along the way, notably NY DJ and mix artist Jellybean Benitez (a name which was inseparable from the dance music genre at the time). Producer of Madonna's breakthrough "Holiday," he returns here with two slick remixes of the track, highlighting some of its many catchy instrumental nuances. The quintessential Madonna dance track, "Into The Groove," which inspired the album's title, bears the mark of editor Shep Pettibone. Pettibone's reassembling of the track turns it into an all-new dance experience, with inspired breaks and gliding accompaniment. The romantic classic "Over And Over" reinvents the original, augmenting Nile Rodgers's tight production with extra percussion and keyboards.

Greatest Hits : First Ten Years (1998) Vanessa Williams

Ater a scandal surrounding nude photos left her without her Miss America crown, Vanessa Williams made a remarkable comeback as a recording artist in 1988. This well-selected 13-track collection presents the finest R&B/pop songs by Williams, featuring both her upbeat, dance-oriented tunes (see "The Right Stuff" and "The Comfort Zone") and adult-contemporary ballads (the sweeping single "Save the Best for Last" and the Sade-like "Betcha Never"). Other highlights of the compilation are the thoughtful, piano-driven number "Love Is" (with Brian McKnight) and "My Flame," a track that finds Williams quite comfortable in a smooth-jazz setting and reinforces her reputation as a deceptively dynamic performer, one who would go on to win respect on both the stage and the screen.

Martika (1988) Martika

Martika is the title of the debut album by former child actor and Teen pop singer Martika. It was released on CBS Records in 1988. The album marked the solo debut for Martika, and spawned the American #1 single "Toy Soldiers" (which features background vocals by Fergie). The song is about drug addiction, but with only a cursory listen it sounds like a break-up ballad. Songs that charted internationally included "More Than You Know", "Water", and "I Feel the Earth Move", a Carole King cover that cracked the American Top 25. Stylistically the music was strictly pop, despite exploring some adult topics lyrically. The song "Water" is partially sung in Spanish, an homage to Martika's Cuban heritage. Other songs were re-recorded fully in Spanish for international release.

Control (1986) Janet Jackson

Control is the third studio album by American R&B/pop singer Janet Jackson, released in 1986. The album was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis as well as Jackson herself, and was her first time working with Jam & Lewis. The subject matter dealt with Jackson's independence, emergence from the Jackson family, and recent annulment of marriage to James DeBarge. It remains one of the most influential urban/R&B albums of all time. Control was the fifth best-selling album of 1987 in the U.S. and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 1987 Grammy Awards, losing out to Paul Simon's Graceland.

In 1989, Control was ranked number twenty-eight on Rolling Stone's list of the The 100 Greatest Albums of the 80's.

In 2007, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame released a list of what they term The Definitive 200 Albums of All Time. Control ranks at #86 on the list.

Super Hits (2001) Regina Belle

Regina Belle has quietly built a loyal urban following by doing something you rarely see minor players do anymore -- gigging. And not just the package tours with artists of similar status, she does those too, but also makes herself available for fraternal gatherings, company parties, clubs, halls, and elaborate weddings and family reunions, unlike some artists who only go out on pampered company sponsored tours that coincide with a current release. If egina's last recording was yesterday, she'd still perform live, 'cause she's an entertainer first and a recording artist second. Super Hits features ten of her highest achievers, from "Baby Come to Me" to "Show Me the Way." They're not super hits (which implies Top five pop smashes) as the CD states, but they are pearls: fine, classy, well-constructed, smooth urban delicacies with upscale arrangements and top-shelf singing.

Platinum & Gold Collection (2003) Taylor Dayne

The numerous dance numbers still sound well-crafted and fun, and Dayne's brassy voice works so well on the Diane Warren ballads that made her an adult contemporary star. When Platinum & Gold steps outside the big ones it doesn't fare as well as her Greatest Hits release, which includes a nice selection of extended mixes. Platinum & Gold offers up a couple of forgettable album tracks and a bombastic Jim Steinman production for the Shadow soundtrack instead.

20th Century Masters The Millennium Collection (2008) Salt-n-Pepa

Released in 2008, this disc doesn't contain anything from Salt-N-Pepa's last album, 1997's Brand New, but it features almost every significant single from their first four. That said, two of the best tracks from Blacks' Magic, "You Showed Me" and "Do You Want Me" (a number seven rap single that seemed nearly as ubiquitous as "Push It" for a couple months during 1991), are missing -- bound to be an issue for some. Do give the compilers some credit for tapping "My Mic Sounds Nice."
