Katy Perry's U.S. No. 1 "I Kissed a Girl" (Virgin/EMI) became the U.K.'s new No. 1 single yesterday to complete a transatlantic double, while ABBA's "Gold -- Greatest Hits" (Polydor/Universal) maintained its hold over the album chart.
Perry's single was rush-released in Britain in the middle of the previous chart week, leading to a No. 4 debut, and its move to the top restricted Kid Rock's reign at No. 1 with "All Summer Long" (Atlantic/Warner Music) to just one week.
The highest new entry of the week was the Verve's reunion single "Love Is Noise" (Parlophone/EMI) at No. 5, the band's fourth U.K. top 10 hit almost 11 years after its last. Noah and the Whale's "5 Years Time" (Vertigo/Universal) climbed 10-7 and Rihanna's current No. 3 Hot 100 hit, "Disturbia" (Def Jam/Universal), raced 34-9 on download sales.
The ABBA compilation has now topped the chart for an aggregate of eight weeks on five separate occasions, the first in October 1992. It had three runs at the summit between April and June of 1999. Below it on the new listings, Duffy's "Rockferry" (A&M/Universal) moved back 3-2 to change places with Coldplay's "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" (Parlophone/EMI).
Sharleen Spiteri's "Melody" (Mercury/Universal) reversed last week's 5-7 move to climb back into the top five, while Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad" (Def Jam/Universal) improved 11-9. The only new titles in the top 40 were English reggae newcomer Natty's "Man Like I" (Atlantic/Warner Music) at No. 21 and an eponymous album from Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst at No. 37 (Wichita Recordings).
