Young Modern (2007) Silverchair

With 2007's YOUNG MODERN, Australian trio Silverchair move still further away from the derivative grunge sound that typified their early releases. The band's fifth studio album is remarkably ambitious, not least for its impressive roster of sonic architects and collaborators. Producer Nick Launay (Talking Heads), mixer David Botrill (Tool), and legendary arranger Van Dyke Parks all lend their talents to YOUNG MODERN's landscape.
There's not a trace of the band's once prominent guitar-heavy sludge, and even the opening rocker, "Young Modern Station," bounces along with a pop glee. "Straight Lines" soars with melodic, heady bliss, while "If You Keep Losing Sleep" plays like a compressed song cycle. It may be Parks's influence, but the ghost of the Beach Boys floats through the album's falsetto singing and dreamy tunes. Closer to XTC than Nirvana, Silverchair take a significant stride forward with this release.

Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces (2007) Seether

With 2007's FINDING BEAUTY IN NEGATIVE SPACES, the Los Angeles-based heavy-rock band Seether tones down the dark mood of KARMA & EFFECT in favor of a more energetic, straight-ahead sound. Reinvigorated by a stint in rehab, South African-born vocalist/guitarist Shaun Morgan, whose singing often recalls that of Metallica's James Hetfield, has an enthusiastic intensity that's evident on the swaggering "Fake It" and the urgent "6 Gun Quota," making for one of Seether's most lively albums.

August Rush (2007) August Rush Soundtrack

For the soundtrack to the 2007 drama AUGUST RUSH, the filmmakers enlisted an impressive array of talent to enhance the story of a musical prodigy and his long-lost parents. Highlights of the collection include the gentle, folk-tinged "This Time," one of a few tracks performed by actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and "Ritual Dance," a deft six-string number by Kaki King, who served as a guitar-playing double for actor Freddie Highmore.

The Bird and The Bee (2007) The Bird and The Bee

There have been many duos in the history of pop music, but few, if any, like the Bird and the Bee. Consisting of Greg Kurstin (all instruments except horns) and Inara George (vocals, and daughter of late Little Feat guitarist Lowell George), Bird and the Bee craft sleek, refined pop songs rich with edgy humor, all seductively conveyed by George's distinctively cool, feathery voice. With its elegant mix of alt-rock catchiness (think Blondie, XTC, Stereolab) and some Brazilian bossa nova touches, THE BIRD AND THE BEE is a noteworthy debut disc.

Ricky Martin... Live Black & White Tour (2007) Ricky Martin

Ricky Martin released his first live disc in 2006 with MTV UNPLUGGED. The album showed Martin to be a polished live performer capable of leading his tight band through powerfully energetic performances that outpaced his studio recordings. Martin must have known he was onto a good thing, because he released another live set in 2007.

BLACK AND WHITE TOUR doesn't have the same stripped-down quality of the MTV date, but it is still powered by an immediacy and a forcefulness that are very impressive. Again, Martin's band is top-notch, and there's no shortage of sparks flying on both the straightforward Latin grooves and the more streamlined dance-pop. "Vuelve" and "Tu Recuerdo" are here, as is, of course, "Livin' La Vida Loca."

The Boy With No Name (2007) Travis

On 2007's The Boy With No Name, Travis's fifth studio album, the Scottish band steps back from the moody and politicized 12 MEMORIES, returning to the lush, laid-back sound of THE MAN WHO and THE INVISIBLE BAND. Not surprisingly, this shift marks the Britpop quartet's reunion with famed producer Nigel Godrich (Beck, Radiohead), who clearly knows how to bring the best out of the earnest ensemble. As always, frontman Fran Healy's plaintive voice is Travis's calling card, as exemplified by the resonant lead single, "Closer," and "Under the Moonlight," an uplifting duet with pop-folky KT Tunstall. For those who may have written Travis off after The Invisible Band, this warm, welcoming album is the perfect occasion to revisit the considerably charming and amiable act.

Greatest Hits (2007) Spice Girls

Given that the Spice Girls achieved their towering popular success in the 1990s through a string of winning singles, it seems hard to believe that fans had to hang in there until 2008 for a decent singles compilation. But good things come to those who wait, and GREATEST HITS delivers in spades what made the Spice Girls famous: fizzy, catchy tunes and plenty of style and attitude.
The essentials--"Wannabe," "Say You'll Be There," "2 Become 1"--are all here, of course, along with a few singles that deserve to be as well known, namely the old school R&B number "Stop" and the funky groover "Who Do You Think You Are." GREATEST HITS also contains two new songs.

Wild Hope (2007) Mandy Moore

By 2007's WILD HOPE, Mandy Moore had successfully completed the transition from teen-pop star to adult contemporary singer. Moore's fourth album is a confident, assured collection of mainstream pop songs, but where its predecessor, COVERAGE, contained all cover songs, WILD HOPE features all originals. Collaborative credits go to the Weepies, Lori McKenna, and Rachael Yamagata, but this is Moore's show, thanks largely to the ease and grace of her vocal performances.

The feel of the album is far removed from the dance-pop that prompted critics to list her alongside Britney Spears; instead there's a reserved, contemplative air to the album, reflected in everything from its light grooves, confessional lyrics, and polished, pristine production. "Extraordinary," the lead single, and the lightly rambling, country-tinged "Most of Me" are examples of Moore's freshly minted approach. But even given the album's grown-up sound, there is still something youthful, refreshing, and undeniably pop about Moore's music, and that combination sets WILD HOPE a cut above.

Hairspray (2007) Soundtrack

Based on the Broadway musical (which was based on the 1988 film by John Waters), the 2007 film adaptation of HAIRSPRAY finds the story coming full circle back to the silver screen. Driven by the star power of Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, and John Travolta (who steals the show with his dressed-in-drag performance as the protagonist's mother), the film features all the upbeat, foot-stomping songs that made the Broadway production such a hit, including "Good Morning Baltimore," "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs," and "Big, Blonde, and Beautiful."
Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the authors of the original show, wrote three new songs for the film: "New Girl in Town," "Come So Far," and the single-worthy "Ladies' Choice," and these tunes blend (in quality and in character) with the originals. Likewise, songs from the original Broadway production that do not appear in the film, including "Cooties" and "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" appear here in new versions. Fans may quibble over the relative merits of the stage version verses the screen, but both should enjoy these energetic performances of HAIRSPRAY's familiar songs.

Back Home (2007) Westlife

Westlife aren’t exactly full of surprises. If they were maybe we wouldn’t be here discussing the release of their ninth (yes, NINTH!) album, another sure-fire number 1 a staggering eight years after their first. Barely breaking sweat at any point over their career, slow and steady wins the race it seems--and song after song after song of just-so pro-forma arm-waving heartache fits that bill. Flip them over and you’ll find guarantees tattooed to their spines--and you can’t knock them for sticking to the rule-sheet like good boy scouts, can you? Of course they’re boys no longer, not that you should expect amendments owing to that fact. Their sound has been afforded maturity in recent years and we get a smooth continuation of that on Back Home, particularly evident on "I’m Already There" as they sing earnestly of missing their kids when away from home as emotions swell courtesy of climbing orchestration and cracking voices. Their voices cradle each other in their famously supportive Motown-aping style throughout, but particularly on "Have You Ever" as Shane steps ahead and aims beyond Ronan Keating’s heights with his keen lead. The album’s token upbeat song "The Easy Way" almost surges into N-Sync territory with a perky horn section, but your pulse needn’t be alarmed. There are no immediately obvious additions to their greatest hits canon (perhaps the Michael Buble penned "Home", given time), but Back Home will reinforce whatever it is you think about Westlife–-guaranteed.

Xanadu on Broadway (2007) Original Broadway Cast

Based on the campy 1980 film starring Olivia Newton-John, the 2007 Broadway musical follows Greek muse Clio (here played by Kerry Butler) as she attempts to inspire an artist (Cheyenne Jackson) to build a roller disco. In addition to songs originally performed by Newton-John (the dreamy "Magic," the romantic title track), the cast recording includes classic tunes by the production's songwriter, Jeff Lynne, and Electric Light Orchestra, most notably a wacky version of "Strange Magic" and a funky take on "All Over the World."

Minutes To Midnight (2007) Linkin Park

After a multi-platinum debut, Grammy nominations, a successful sophomore album, sold-out tours, and a collaboration with Jay-Z, the pressure was on for Linkin Park to deliver the goods with their 2007 release, MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT. Interestingly, the alternative metal outfit, best known for mixing rap, rock, and electronic touches, deviates from their aggressive, angst-filled sound on their third outing--opting instead to dabble in moody, atmospheric rock.
Opener "Wake" establishes the ethereal, synth-driven feel that characterizes much of the disc. Crunching electric guitars are few and far between, and most of the swirling, electronica-textured tracks weigh in at mid-to-downtempo. There are still moments of rock intensity, such as "Bleed It Out" (featuring one of rapper Mike Shinoda's few appearances), but the overall mood seems better suited to pensive bedsitting than a festival mosh pit. Co-producer Rick Rubin makes the dreamy soundscapes gleam, but longtime fans may miss the fist-pumping energy of early Linkin Park. Still, the new sonic palette of MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT shows a band willing to push past their own tried-and-true formulas.

Little Voice (2007) Sara Bareilles

Buoyed by the springy, Motown-ish single "Love Song," Sara Bareilles's major-label debut (and second full-length album) has brought the songwriter/pianist some well-deserved attention and a place on the Billboard charts. With a clear, expressive (and hardly little) voice that glides effortlessly from alto to soprano, Bareilles conveys vulnerability and wisdom in lyrics that speak honestly about relationships from a woman's point of view. Her piano-playing and songwriting veer from Billy Joel bounce to Fiona Apple angst, but it's all held together by a commanding sense of melody, and a lovely, pristine production.
The bonus disc of the LITTLE VOICE deluxe edition presents Sara Bareilles performing acoustic versions of some of the album's tracks, including the chiming "Bottle It Up" and the bouncy hit single "Love Song."

It Can Happen To Anyone (2007) Elisabeth Withers

BET Award Nominated "It Can Happen To Anyone" is Elisabeth Withers' debut CD and it does not disappoint, from the first note of the opening song Simple Things she rekindles memories of Gladys Knight and other soul singers from the golden age of R&B. I haven't heard anyone ever come that close to recapturing that sound but she does and does so effortlessly. The album however is more than a tribute to the bygone era as it's filled with plenty of modern influences, some gospel, some pop and even rock, the title track It Can Happen is the perfect example of this, part funk, part R&B and part soul. Other stand outs include Heartstrings, Listen, and Next To You.

Definitely a brilliant debut, and hopefully a foreshadowing of what she plans on continuing to bless the world with.
